Induction is a requirement for all staff within the Devon Youth Service. This two part process consists of a booklet to be completed locally with the support from a line manager and attendance at two evening sessions run by an approved member of the staff team. Introductory Youth Work Training
All new youth workers who do not have a qualification in youth work undertake Introduction to Youth Work Training (link to pack). Some youth workers new to Devon but qualified elsewhere may still take the course or parts of it, as a refresher and part of their induction to Devon youth Service.
The course is divided into ten workshops and attendance at all sessions in mandatory.
To complete the course staff are required to complete a portfolio of evidence and attend an assessment interview.
Staff both paid and unpaid, working for voluntary youth organisations are also eligible to attend the course and are required to pay a charge of £120 which can be reclaimed by organisations registered with the Local Youth Network.

NVQ in Youth Work
Assistant Youth Support and Youth Support Workers are required to achieve an NVQ 2 in youth work. Senior Youth Support workers are required to achieve an NVQ 3 in youth work.
To achieve the level two award candidates must demonstrate their competence through a portfolio of evidence across six units of the National Occupational Standards for Youth and Community Workers. (link to NVQ 2 pack)
The level 3 NVQ requires candidates to demonstrate evidence across eight units form the National Occupational Standards for Youth and Community Workers. (link to NVQ 3 pack)
